Career progression
For 15 years, I worked for GE in varying roles of responsibility, ranging from operations to quality, and ultimately training and human resources. I worked for Genworth Financial for four years as the senior vice president, human resources, overseeing retirement income and investment. I later was the senior vice president of human resource operations. In January 2008, I joined Amerigroup as the executive vice president, human resources.
Proudest business achievement
Working abroad as a single woman who had never been out of the country when asked by GE to live in Asia. In Japan in 1995, I was the only female on the senior staff. The females in the office were primarily “office ladies” who got coffee and tea for the males. They were highly educated women who wore the same uniforms to work. I conducted a focus group with these women to see where they wanted to go with their careers. They were thirsting to be challenged and use the skills they had. I helped the CEO understand the uniforms should go and to utilize some of their talents to do more challenging roles. I left Japan three months later, but I was thrilled to receive a newsletter from the CEO two months later with a picture of the “office ladies” in everyday clothes. Several women were looking at other roles where they could utilize their skills. A note at the top of the newsletter from the CEO read, “Thanks to you, we have taken the first steps.”

How do you balance your time?
I married a wonderful man. He does more than 50 percent at home, allowing me to focus professionally. I have always been a planner and an organized person, but I am a firm believer that sometimes the company will win and sometimes the family will win. My children are good at keeping me in check and making sure that I know when the company is winning out more. At those times, I make sure that I give more to the family or at least let them know when they will get more of my time.
