Your job
I am responsible for the public communications and outreach for The Arc of the Virginia Peninsula, a nonprofit that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I get to share the story of The Arc and speak with businesses and individuals about the amazing talents and contributions of individuals with disabilities. I also am responsible for the grant-writing and the development of marketing plans and materials. I plan various events to raise money and increase community awareness of The Arc’s programs and services.
Education
BA in English with a concentration in technical writing from Christopher Newport University
Career progression
I began my career at a public relations firm as an intern and was offered a full-time job when my internship ended. When I left the agency, I had risen to the role of public relations account executive. I went on to serve as the manager of marketing and public affairs at the Newport News/ Williamsburg International Airport. I left the airport to take on the challenging job of URS’ public information officer at VDOT’s Smart Traffic Center. I have been the director of marketing and development at The Arc for almost three years.
Proudest business achievement
Prior to my college graduation, I was stressed about finding a job I wanted and where I could learn. When I wasn’t at work at my internship or in class I was searching tirelessly for a job. Right after graduation, the public relations firm offered me a full-time job. I am proud to have entered the work-world based on the diligent work I was doing as an intern and become a part of a dynamic team of public relations professionals, all of whom were women.
Biggest success factor
The support of my family and great friends. They have been my biggest cheerleaders and have always supported me. I am blessed to have such fabulous people in my life.
Professional activities
I am active with the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and graduated in 2009 from its Leadership Institute of the Virginia Peninsula.
Volunteer activities
I am president of the Kiwanis Club of Mercury 64 and an active member of the Junior League of Hampton Roads.
How do you balance your time?
It is difficult, but I work hard to balance my life and not overstretch myself. I rely on my planner to keep myself straight and my family and friends aren’t afraid to tell me when they think I need to stop and take a breath.
Biggest obstacle
When I was first getting started in the workplace, I was young and had to prove myself.
How have you overcome some of your challenges?
I have overcome challenges by never giving up or losing faith. When things are the roughest, it’s the best time to show others what you’re made of.
